For a dog GPS tracker, define the primary job in concrete terms:

  • Remote location: You need a location update when the dog is no longer near a household phone.
  • Boundary awareness: You want a notification when the device leaves a declared Place or safe zone.
  • Emergency search: You need a higher-frequency mode after an escape.
  • Routine visibility: You want household members or a sitter to see the dog’s current or recent location.

If the main need is permanent identification after recovery, a microchip solves a different job. If the main need is nearby-finding inside or near the home, a short-range finder may be simpler. If cellular coverage is absent on the route, a cellular tracker is a fundamental mismatch.

Use fit as a hard eligibility gate

The dependency chain is also longer than “the tracker saw a new position.” A notification can depend on device motion, satellite positioning, radio reporting, platform processing, phone internet, operating-system delivery, and human response. Compare battery modes, not one headline

Battery claims are conditional. The same tracker can use very different power depending on the mode.
